Speaking as a (part) Italian here, I'd say Italians are actually a very diverse group of people that can barely grouped together as one distinct ethnicity.
Northern Italians, on average, are basically of Celtic as well as Germanic stock and are not too dissimilar from Frenchmen or even at times southern Germans.
When we get to the South of Italy, things start to diversify.
Sicilians are an incredibly mixed bunch due to the myriad of people that passed through the island: Greeks, Berbers, Vandals (Germanic people), Arabs...have all left their markers there. When I take a look at the Sicilian friends I have, there's for instance one blonde guy while another guy looks almost like an Iraqi warlord.
Calabrians are basically Greek. That's it. They're Greek.
Campanians/"Neapolitans" (where I can trace my ancestry to) on the other hand aren't much different from the Northern Italians except for a higher Greek influence - the difference between us Neapolitans and the Northern Italians is that the chance we're gonna stab and/or shoot you is a bit higher.
TL;DR version: you're wrong. And you're gonna end up in the freezer.
