This is really good but it's honestly gotten overrated at this point. I think it hits the top of a lot of end of year lists because it intersects with the interests of a variety of different subcultures of music-website-visiting fans, not because its that much better than everything else that came out.

I personally consider deafheaven the most overrated musical act of the decade

Post punk and noise rock albums have been getting called terrifying as long as I’ve been listening to music and at some point the hyperbole starts to feel a little silly. This is a modern and fresh take and its awesome but is it really doing that much that we haven’t heard before, even decades earlier? I mean it’s high praise that the things that come to mind for me when I hear this are classics like Filth and Streetcleaner or other albums that are still pretty great like Trumpeting Ecstasy. I just don’t know that it’s really the runaway best album of the year, I like Idol and a couple of other things I heard this year just as much.

Deafheaven would definitely be in conversation - I like all of their stuff to varying degrees but their crossover appeal is somewhat mistifying to me.
