What is a good starting point for this band? It gets such incredibly high overall scores that I really want to dive in, but I'm having a first listen at Boxer and I'm like in the 3/3.5 area here a couple of songs in. Is this a band that really needs to grow?

Oh yes, they are massive growers. Boxer was a 3-3.5 on my first listen too. It's a 5 now.

I'm half way through the new one now and it looks like it'll be another grower. Not reaaaly feeling it the same way others are here. So far. And this is only first listen.

I think Alligator is a better starting place tbh, more immediately hooky but still captures a lot of what makes the band great. I'm biased though because it's my favourite. Boxer is wonderful too but its definitely a slow burn. When it clicks though...

Shit, I don’t do leaks but goddamn is it tempting. Only three days till official release though, I can wait. I’m tempted to watch the film but I also want my first go on the album to be as fresh as possible (I only spun the singles a couple times each).

And to tempt further haha yeah, this album is great. A tad underwhelming at times but first listens are never reliable.

And like that Quiet Light alone is already better on second listen.

Boney the movie truly deepens the meanings of the songs I highly recommend watching it before listening

That one definitely stuck out, but I feel like I've barely skimmed the surface of Not in Kansas. I almost feel like that one track has more lyrics than half this record.

Not In Kansas I'm not big on. Not much of a fan of the melody on that one, especially from the female vocalist.

Oblivions is astounding though. An early favourite that one is. Love Hey Rosey too.

'I think Alligator is a better starting place' (2)

Boxer is my fave, but I think Alligator makes for a better starting point. These guys do take a bit of getting into overall although I don't remember having an issue with that one.

Yeah I may actually watch the film early, just watched their Q&A they posted on YouTube about how interwoven the processes of the film and album were and how the music in the film isn't quite the same as on the album either.
