It is their most inoffensive, but the songs are well-done and structured, something I really can't say about Sorceress.

Also, this has Moon Above, Sun Below and that song is pretty amazing minus the cheesy a capella part in the middle

The middle of this is so strange but I like everything on here, and it’s nice diversity. Their weakest album though imo, Sorceress is a step up but neither touch Heritage.

Eternal Rains, Moon Above, and Faith in Others are fantastic.

Heritage is a joy, I think some people are just bitter because it's the first completely 'not metal' Opeth. This on the other hand is dull, nothing here interests me, it's very cohesive due to it's consistent sound & restraint but the ambition is absent.

Sometimes creativity beats cohesion, especially when an album that's full of the latter is completely devoid of the former.

This isn’t that cohesive, like the middle songs between Moon and Voice of Treason are totally different styles, like think about how River progresses from beginning to end, it’s pretty out there.

"the songwriting was so disjointed and all over the place, a weakness none of Mike's writing had up until that point"

Opeth's first two albums are FULL of it.

Yeah, Famine is definitely the worst offender of their discography. That said, I think Heritage has an engaging atmosphere most of the time, especially in Häxprocess and I Feel the Dark, and Folklore is the best and most Opeth song they released in this decade imo. The album could be better overall but I think it's far from their worst.

I don't know if that was clear from my comment, but I didn't mean that Famine is my least favorite Opeth track, just their most incoherent. I like most of the individual parts but they don't get along together at all. My least favorite Opeth track ever is Goblin

Famine is disjointed ye man I agree on that, it’s a mish mash but I still dig it.

Goblin has that casino sound that I really can't stand that much, that said I must admit that the instruments jam quite a bit, but it gets boring after a minute for me. On the long run it just doesn't do anything for me, especially not between Elysian Woes and River
