it's very unfortunate. the worst part is it just seems like he's phoning in the harsh stuff at this point. like I seriously doubt he does any kind of training for them

I hate posting this a lot, but it speaks volumes

Maybe the passion for the heavier DM style isn't there anymore?

The outro riff in Harlequin is the funnest riff to play whilst doing the crab walk m/

I feel like Opeth really just need to stop catering to fans. It's holding them back, and I think it's affected the quality of both the last album and this tour.

If they ditched the DM entirely and just went crazy with the prog the way they did on Heritage their next album would be the better for it. So would their live shows.

Well they need a mixture of old plus new, every band does it.

Mike obviously enjoys the newer stuff as its still fresh, being the newest material obviously.

Also it's lighter on his voice and he knows his growls are fading, mainly to do with age and the fact that he definitely doesn't practice.

I feel like Mikael just doesn't like the old material at this point, though. Which is dumb but if his heart's not in it he's not going to be performing well.

I saw In Flames open for them, and they didn't even touch their old material, even though their first 5 albums are far better than anything after, and yet it was a good move. Why? Cause they have enthusiasm about the new material, and it showed. It was a far better show than Opeth's.

Opeth should do the same, especially after such a significant style change.

ah I don't know about that. Their new style is a little hard for me to get into. I'm not saying it's bad or anything, just not for me. So next time they come to my town I would like to still hear some old material, regardless of his vocals.

See this makes sense, but when I saw them they played their new shit without any life in them whatsoever, and then when it came time to close the set and play a couple old songs they went fucking hard and went out on a high note while upstaging all the other bands that played that night. This was back in 2012 though, I can imagine his passion for old opeth stuff fading in the 3 years since

It seemed to be the opposite when I saw them. The band was tightest playing the new material. The rest of the set seemed extremely sluggish

Im guessing they (or at least akerfeldt) have grown more and more jaded towards their metal stuff over the years, especially now that they have two full albums of this new sound, so they've fully embraced it at this point

Both the old and the new is pretty sloppy on the wacken 2015 gig. Ã…kerfeldt doesn't hit the right notes on To Rid the Disease, and at the start of the song, he wonders out loud if he'll be able to recall the lyrics. I really hope they put serious effort into the anniversary tour, I'd hate to sit through three hours of impassionate riffing and growls that sound like puke. The Finnish gig is like 2-3 weeks before the UK/US shows so i guess i'll be able to report if someone is interested
