Actually revisited this two days ago. So blissful. Fuck Morrissey but I love the Smiths. If only he never spoke.

Lots of great musicians are total cunts. I rectified this in my head long ago.

Irrelevant to this album but there's really no better or more suited place to mention it - "Ask" is such an incredible and incredibly underrated Smiths track.

Ask is tier S smiths songs, I thought this would be a widely accepted thing

S: I Know It's Over

A+: Never Had No One Ever, Bigmouth Strikes Again

A-: The Queen Is Dead, There Is a Light That Never Goes Out, The Boy With the Thorn...

B: Cemetry Gates, Frankly, Mr. Shankly

B-: Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others

C: Vicar in a Tutu

revisiting their discog and reaching this point almost nullifies the endeavour, because this is on another level entirely. Current rough tiers for a bit of additional perspective. Only inessential track is 'Vicar' in reality. Remarkable album. I Know It's Over is an all-time of a song and tier A+ isn't far behind

Atta boy. I personally would flip "Vicar" and "Some Girls", that's my one (and only) gripe with this album - I think it closes on a rather weak note, comparatively.
"Cemetary Gates" needs to be higher, top tier Smiths track tbh. But B-tier is still solid, I guess.
Indeed "I Know It's Over" is one of the best things ever.

This is on a list of pending (potential) promotions but it seems daft to delay the inevitable

yeah, Cemetry Gates is an essential little ditty, but doesn't quite provide the gravitas of a few of the longer cuts here. There's maybe some room for manoeuvre tho

"Some Girls" certainly seems a touch, redundant perhaps? As a closer it really doesn't leave a lasting impression and feels kinda unnecessary. Like if you were to cut it completely, would it really affect the overall feeling / quality. I definitely think its placement, masquerading as a sort of bizarre outro hurts

"Vicar" is fine and can stay as a bridge to the more enticing songs on either side. The two are certainly 'flippable' at this stage, even if the construction of the album is undoubtedly playing a part here (this is why I always struggle with the concept of ranking individual songs into tiers)
