Not only did they write a bad album, they also alienated their fanbase by the sudden shift in sound and Spencer's shitty attitude.

Is it stylistically doomed to fail, or is there potential there that Underoath failed to tap into?

You could ask that about anything. Any style can be great if done well enough.

Was there or was there not untapped potential with the stylistic decisions that Underoath chose here?

There was a bunch of wasted potential considering their past albums lol

@Firedust: That's true but Kenbo seems to think the style itself is doomed to fail and Underoath should stay post-hardcore/metalcore forever.

Sunburnt and Unsound are evidence of wasted potential on a new sound that was actually good

Stop comparing to past albums. No wonder you hate it so goddamn much.

The style itself isn't doomed to fail, it's that Underoath failed at it you dingus.

They're at their best when they write metalcore/post-hardcore. This album showed they can't write radio rock.

Too bad those were on a best of release and not a separate EP, I make it a point to never save best of albums to my spotify.

It's also kind of hard to not compare it to past albums since you know, every album before this is better and I've been listening to Underoath since I was 13.

They were going in a nice direction that made the Disambiguation sound much more accessible, and they threw that out the window for this garbage

So basically you're a nostalgiatard and unwilling to judge individually? I have a clean slate here considering while I've known of them since I was 8, I couldn't understand just how great past albums were until this dropped. I've already explained why I feel that way. Sure I may also have a soft spot for radio rock type stuff but regardless this is far from unlistenable.

they also showed on Disambiguation they could write more accessible songs (Paper Lung, Driftwood) and not be completely garbage

Paper Lung slaps massive cock, one of Spencer's best performances

Steak and calmrose, thank you. You guys know what's up.

This album was a step in the wrong direction, plain and simple.

And no, I'm not a nostalgiatard, Underoath is my favorite band of all time.
