Ugh, Quiet Light could be a top 10 Natty song, I don't know yet.

it's much closer in sound to trouble will find me than their other releases. seriously feels like this album never happened in their timeline (hard to find -> i am easy to find)

Agreed, but the electronics are a nod to SWB for sure, I feel like it's a blend between this record and its predecessor.

Trouble was my second favourite National, so am considerably more excited now

I always love their albums, but this new one seems like a special one. Even the subpar singles sound way better in the context of the record.

I’ll be the judge of all this.

yup and just reinforces my impression (bolstered by interviews and all that primary source stuff) that SWB was essentially b sides or non priority cuts from IAETF. the more overt and clumsy electronic stuff went on here while the more natural hybrids of the two sounds went to the better album.

And considering Trouble is my fav Natty I might be a wreck by the end of this album

This has no right to be as good as it is, as a late-career 16 track hour+ long LP released less than two years after the last... but for sure this just about confirms how long they had this stuff cooking before SWB.

Halfway through the album and I already cried twice.

I'm gonna call it and say that Natty is one of the best bands ever. They deliver classic after classic and they always get away with it.

All the pre release songs are either terrible or boring - how can the new one be good with them among the tracklist?

singles are the weaker tracks and fit very well in the album's flow. also there's 13 other damn tracks

They already were, my friend.

the "singles are boring" narrative is def gonna fall away as everyone hears the full album and realises that they're all good songs. gonna be funny to see people backtrack

Well the opener is a turd for the ages so I guess getting it out the way at the start is maybe good for the flow...although it is destined to put me in a bad mood every time I spin this.

Almost guaranteed that one gets deleted from all Doof future listens at some point.
