The only thing I ever come back to here is the Low Feels - Surrogate - Honeysuckle trio. I feel like these guys show the pros and cons of coming up with a very distinctive, identifiable sound. The heavy parts all just feel like iterations on stuff they’ve done before and it felt that way for like 3 albums

Not necessarily. Killer was decidedly less heavy and was Dillinger's most accessible album to date. This is able to merge those two realms much more effectively, making it basically an upgraded Killer with more 'oomph' to it.

At different times I’ve had this anywhere from a 3.5-4.5 depending how much dillinger I’ve recently listened to before I get back to it

Definitely their most divisive next to Ire Works. It almost fully commits to a more mainstream sound, which makes it easy to get into, but to some it's also easy to see it as the band neutering their sound.

Opening two tracks are still peak Dillinger though

Yep, agreed with itwas and Shadowmire. Killer is their only album I don’t enjoy, this is decent but feels like a retread of sorts. First 4 albums are essential though.

That wasn’t really my complaint with Killer, it was more that I felt like I had heard the core sounds a million times before on the previous records. This one gets a little murkier and throws some more creative ideas at you during the heavier sections

For sure Demon, there’s enough unique about their sound that they had me engaged through Option

"It's all that they had before them, but realized to its full potential. You have the more big-chorus influence/pop kind of leanings of Killer merged with the explosive technicality of Calculating. Sounds closer to Miss Machine and I think it succeeds in being one of their heaviest offerings while also being incredibly catchy and, to an extent, accessible. Greg's vocals are also spectacular."

^this.
