A 3.0 is fair enough for Load. It’s definitely a product of its time, though I also think Metallica tried way harder to write a hard rock album, and that it’s not the blatant cash-grab most accuse it of being.

House That Jack Built is one of their most underrated songs, the riffs are heavy and I just love the dark atmosphere of the track in general.

It certianly draws alot of influence from the bluesy stoner rock bands of the era, primarily Kyuss, Corossion Of Conformity, and Monster Magnet. You can also hear alot of Alice In Chains, Pantera, and even Primus and RHCP on Load and ReLoad.

I read an interview with Lars from the time period and he said some of the bands they listened to alot during the writing stages included Alice In Chains, Primus, Kyuss, ZZ Top, and even Alanis Morissette and Garth Brooks. But you're undoutably correct about the stoner metal influence on Load. "Thorn Within" and "Outlaw Torn" in particular. "2x4" is Metallica doing Pantera, and "Ronnie" is them doing Primus.

Makes total sense. And yes I also hear the bluesy/country vibes in this. An odd move for Metallica for sure but definitely not the blatant cash grab as some would say.
And how could I forget Outlaw Torn, I love the S&M version particularly.
