AJFA was my first Metallica so thats maybe the reason I like it so much.

Battery, Disposable Heroes and Master of Puppets are three of the best thrash/metal songs ever

liked RtL more when I was younger, this one became my favorite probably about halfway through high school. still a perfect album.

Used to think this was better but RtL won me over eventually. Riffs on this and AJFA end up sounding a little samey. Still rules, just not as much.

Doesn't matter what they've become, first four albums will always rule

the production on AJFA kills me. paper thin guitars and the drums just sound like a click track. it's better on vinyl, but still lacks the punch of this album or the perfectly raw sound on RtL.

*Razor thin guitars. No other Metallica album has a tone that cuts as viciously as on AJFA. And the drums sound like a click track because Lars' performance is so flawless and precise.

so basically Metallica admittedly fucked up the production job on AJFA, which was then widely lambasted by most listeners and critics, but you find that rather than just being a mistake, that it cuts viciously? at least on St. Anger they did it on purpose..

also lol they sound like a click track because they were recorded poorly. they sound perfect on MoP, and they sound like shit on AJFA. it's still a good album, but could've been classic if they hadn't botched the production job so badly.

Haha. Obviously, the production has issues with the lack of bass, etc. I'm just saying that the guitars and drums sound great. "To Live Is To Die" would be nowhere near as badass if it had the sound of this album.

I'll agree that To Live Is To Die is the exception probably, but the rest of the album would sound better like this or even RtL imo.

idk I can't get past the way that Lars' snare sounds on AJFA

Really? MOP's kick is weak and the snare has that typical big 80s arena rock reverbed sound. AJFA drums have way more impact. Like it's sharp and in your face. The kick drum especially sounds sick. It's really the most badass and "metal" sound they've ever had, imo.
