Oh, two of your three fives include the Mantle and Metallica so we should respect your opinion. Got it.

The Mantle has some filler and empty atmospherics while this and Pale Folklore are far more substantial works.

I know post-rock fans may give The Mantle a 5 more immediately but eh.

This one never grew on me like the others. Still a bunch of solid material

The Grain is the most "empty atmospherics" they've ever done though

i dont follow your logic, this has more of a post rock influence than Mantle.

I used to feel that way but it grew on me. It's a nice way to come down after the album climaxes in Bloodbirds

gonna have to disagree with you guys real hard on that one. Not Unlike the Waves and the Fortress is Burning Trilogy are amazing. Whole album start to finish is exceptional, sans maybe the outro wall of fuzz The Grain, which does not need to be debated for the millionth time on this site.

I love the outro fuzz. especially after you know its the symbolic end of the world

I mean, the rest is still awesome (bar The Grain), but the first 3 are definitely my favorites.

Limbs is probably my favorite Agalloch song. There's that acoustic guitar and delay guitar part around 3:23 that repeats in oddly timed intervals and lines up perfectly at the end, and it just blows my mind every time.

ye it's called a phase. Technique in minimal classical music pioneered by Steve Reich in the 60s. Nothing revolutionary but Agalloch use it very effectively in that section

Not quite phasing, which is a cool technique but is caused by two players playing at slightly different bpms no? As they gradually shift away from each other and then back towards each other to create some really mind bending sounds, but you have to have an insane level of musicianship to pull that off with actual instruments.

This is just a fantastic use of polymeters. The acoustic guitar on the left is playing a simple 4/4, but if you listen to the delay guitar (and count along with the beats) it's playing at a 5/4 until it eventually lines up at the end
