There is a large difference between pretending an album is one of the most important to you and acknowledging that an album is of great importance to the world. That’s kind of what I’m talking about with distinguishing that not all classics are perfect and that not all perfect albums are classic. There is an element of objectivity in regards to classic albums that doesn’t necessarily exist with personal favourites.

“not everyone rates like that tho

idgaf how iconic or whatever an album is. its 5 if i get maximum enjoyment”

I know, I don’t even rate like that anymore, but that’s how the metric should be if the descriptor for a 5 is “classic”

Well sure, but why on earth would you subjugate your god-given sputnikmusic.com ratings page to acknowledging which albums are of great importance to the world? I can respect this for that, but that was never the reason I bumped it up to 4.5 in the first place
Like, I enjoy it enough on its own terms that bumping it up for its legacy would feel a little cheap if anything - in retrospect, I think I ended up doing just that for Vespertine and have felt off about it ever since

I think the actual description Sput has for a 5/5 is complete nonsense and so does Pots according to his actual 5s…so not really sure what his argument is.

Do we really have to only 5 ‘classic’ albums? I just award 5s (and 4.5s) to my faves.

why would there be some kind of obligation to 5 this due to the legacy/cultural impact it has as if it’s even relevant outside of dorky internet spaces like this one

@demon not solely because it’s classic but that is part of it

@johnny solely because that is a part of what makes an album what it is. Gotta consider everything. An opposite example, Ruinism is a perfect album to me, so it’s a 5, but it’s actually not cuz it’s not a classic so it’s a 4.5. It’s all apart of the equation. I probably have that 5d tho but again I don’t rate the way I think things should be rated anymore 😂

I would fucks with a two layer rating system where the descriptor “classic” is replaced with “perfect” and then there is a separate rating on a scale from “completely irrelevant” or something like that to “classic” so you could rate something like, say, trout mask replica a 1 and a classic at the same time

Basically my gripe is the word “classic” should either mean something or not be part of the rating system at all

Optimally it should also have some kind of broader cultural impact.

Aight, well in that case I vaguely agree and have done my best to forget it was ever a definitive term in the rating chart to begin with lol
I would say that the majority of user (as in anyone with an account on this site, or tbh anyone in general) discourse on the relevance/irrelevance of music is hair-tearingly tedious backseat droning to me, but I'd fw with your compass-style system anyway as a sick experiment to see how seriously seahorse fuckers like colton took it

Cloton you can waste as many minutes of your life as you like typing comments no-one will ever read (whoops), but the hysteria value of you dunking on online nerdspheres while flogging the dead horse of Sweet Trip superfandom is always gonna be your biggest contribution sorry I don't make the rules here

I like everything about this

“would say that the majority of user (as in anyone with an account on this site, or tbh anyone in general) discourse on the relevance/irrelevance of music is hair-tearingly tedious backseat droning to me, but I'd fw with your compass-style system anyway as a sick experiment to see how seriously seahorse fuckers like colton took it “

Lmao. Well yeah I think rating earnestly is inherently tedious to begin with tbh which is why I have polluted my ratings beyond repair with schizophrenic abandon, an attempt to free myself of the laborious nature of trying to quantify an art that is best enjoyed at whim. Which is all quite contrary to being rigidly opposed to using “classic” as a subjective term, but I do find it interesting to discuss the legacy and impact of music in that way

"Perfect" is such a heavy word tho because I don't know if I'd consider any album perfect??
