I certainly agree with the notion that this is the weakest of their 'metal albums' but I'll probably change my mind next week... maybe.

Some 'newpeth' fan (i.e. me) keeps bumping them. Got my ticket for Manchester, still no idea of logistics but trains are running late so if I end up back home around 2am then it'll have to do. Not missing this.

found the 2004 koch vinyl pressing of this a few months ago. its always awesome when you randomly find a record at the local shop that you've been actively searching out.

This has always been my favorite Opeth

think of the album as a sandwich: t/t, fair judgment, absent friends, and masters are like delicious meats, cheeses, and veggies, while wreath and by the pain are like stale bread

Then remastered compilation with this and Damnation is perfect
|
| |
Agreed but then the label would've made less money!

Are the re-masters better then guys? I've only heard the original recordings.

When it comes to metal, always avoid remasters (for the most part)

but bloc the remasters of this and Damnation are done by Steven Wilson and are therefore good

'When it comes to metal, always avoid remasters'
What's your reasoning behind this? I'm curious. Surely there are plenty of exceptions/it varies, no? Also, does it depend on era/sub-genre etc?

"I don't want that ipod hating muppet touching my shit"
If any mid-era Opeth is "your shit", I'm afraid it already happened anyway
"Surely there are plenty of exceptions/it varies, no?"
There are some exceptions, the most obvious one being Uroboros by Dir En Grey. They screwed up the original master, so the re-release is on a whole other level. Haven't heard the D&D remasters though, so I can't judge. Damnation is good as it is imo though, while this one has more of a thin production but it definitely adds to its abrasive nature, so improving it would be possible, but not particularly reasonable.

Just from my own experiences of listening to remasters. Megadeth remasters are a great example because some of the shit is even re-recorded for the worse.
In general, most of the metal remasters I have heard are just the same thing, but this time everything is plain louder and sometimes so loud that the shit clips. Or a remaster where the kick drum turns into a click drum, if you know what I mean.
I am sure there are exceptions, and perhaps Opeth is one of them. My commentary is probably ignorant as shit haha

No worries, was just concerned about buying the incorrect edition of old metal records. Is there any easy way of checking, like a website database, or do you just use Google?
No point in getting the latest edition with a load of extra bonus material if it's a crappy re-master, however if the sound quality is essentially equal then it's worth it.

I could def be wrong about this particular album though, as others have said that they like it. The remaster might have a positive impact on the overall sound of the album.
I think Google or hell, even this site, is the best bet when it comes to finding out if a remaster is worth it or not. Lots of people are opinionated on the subject and can give meaningful input on what is actually different from the original.
