For Mike too tbf. As if you'd leave DT to tour with Avenged Sevenfold...

They did put out some below par releases but I thought Black Clouds was a bit of a return to form

Edit-I think that was Mike's last?

Oh yeah Art there was some shit while Mike was in the band but things just go so much more insipid after he jumped ship.

you think systematic chaos wasn't just as insipid as the post-mike stuff?

the drumming is a lot more generic though, i give you that

Systematic Chaos is easily the worst album they made while Mike was still onboard.

Honestly Art the generic drumming is one of the biggest issues I have with current DT. On albums such as this and Awake the drumming always stood out and you could always distinguish Mike from his contemporaries. Now it's as generic as it gets.

Had the drums on A Dramatic Turn of Events been performed by Portnoy, the record would have been one of their absolute best ones in my opinion. Even though some of the material on it was superfluous, the songwriting was a huge step away from the clumsiness of the previous three albums.

Black Clouds already was a sort of recovery though, I'd give you that, despite its inconsistent mashes of ideas

Yeah fates is #1 prog metal band period besides maybe voivod

What's nuts is most people over on the rush fan site I used to frequent seriously think dramatic turn of events and s/t are mind blowing, some dude said illumination theory moved him to tears... Yet almost none of them have heard voivod or fates

The fact that more prog fans haven't heard of FW should embarrass them. They're probably the most consistent of the big 3

DT is just going through the motions now. It really sucks since we know what they were capable of once.

Anyway. Looking forward to the new FW, Pain of Salvation, Evergrey, and Riverside albums
