I used to listen to that song all the time when I was 23. Also was going through a tough case of unrequited love at the time, so the refrain "you'll sit alone forever, if you wait for the right time" and "don't give away the end -- the one thing that stays mine" demolished me.

Man. I think it was nearly 10 years ago that I wrote a review about this album, mostly contextualized around a specific girl with whom I've had a really complicated relationship. We're now basically going through a breakup of sorts. I've returned to a few songs from this album, and they really hit a different way. Love this line from 23, feel like I've finally internalized it (funnily enough, I'm also more or less Jim Adkins' age when he wrote 23):
"I won't always love what I'll never have / I won't always live in my regrets"
Though, versus unrequited love, 23 feels more poignant as a breakup song to me, personally. The opening verse "I felt for sure last night/ that once we said goodbye/ No one else will know these lonely dreams/ No one else will know that part of me" is something that I can relate to incredibly well, as I always had a special relationship with her.
Meanwhile, Kill just destroys me. Adkins does an incredible job of taking some pretty commonplace emotions and finding some really emotionally resonant insights there:
"Oh god, please don't tell me this has been in vain/ I need answers for what all the waiting I've done means"
"I know what you wanna say/ I know it but can't help feeling differently/ I loved you, and I should've said it/ But tell me just what has it ever meant?"
"I can't help it baby, this is who I am/ I'm sorry but I can't just go turn off how I feel"
All of these lines resonate like crazy with me. I feel like there are a lot of tracks I don't really care for here, but that's okay. Will always be a special album, and I'm glad I came back to it now

Yeah, that song absolutely decimates when you're going through that sort of thing, which I did, ironically at age 23. I feel for ya and hope you pull through it better off in the end.

Thanks SS (or should I say Sowing). Things are still a bit raw right now but honestly, I feel like I finally have emotional clarity (heh, pun intended) now. There are still the stray lines from Kill, 23, and Polaris that cut close to home, but I think for the most part, these lyrics remind me more of my past self than my current self. I'll heal soon enough.
Also, I've been listening to Polaris since my post, and it absolutely belongs in the same breath as Kill and 23. Incredible track. I'll also add, 10 years have passed and I still fucking hate Nothing Wrong, I hear the first chords of the guitar riff and I'm just like nooope.
