there's too much variation in music taste for me to be bothered to do that

theres nothing to do. its just a critical process. you either keep your bias in check or you don't and the end result reflects on your credibility.

if u write a 4.5/5 review and say "this is the greatest album ive ever heard but some of the songs suck" nobody is going to take you seriously

it's not as if I don't explain my reasoning. I'd just rather take my own positive perspective if possible, and the context of the album and its audience, rather than start from some arbitrary position on the style or whatever. that doesn't make it totally unobjective, but when you listen to a range of quality music it's largely subjective from that point anyway. you don't have to be aiming for the average consensus the whole time



to me reviews are just as much a way of reflecting on an album and generating discussion than just trying to convince someone to listen to something.

and doing that while maintaining a balance of subjectivity and objectivity does not change your ability to have your own positive perspective in any way it just makes your opinion more persuasive and tenable.

all perspectives are objective to some extent, and reviews that aim for and purport objectivity still vary a lot





most albums are a sum of their parts to me anyway. there are few albums I can listen through the whole way through without losing my attention at some point



a 2 song EP with a 5/5 and a 1/5 song is clearly worthy of more praise than one with two 3/5 songs IMO
