Symbolic seemed to be the one most loved by my friends. All though that took a while to grow on me I was slightly disappointed when if first came out because of its more straight ahead approach and I would definitely agree the previous 2 records meant more to me ,not that I dont love Symbolic.

Symbolic is plenty ambitious for most bands though, they just happened to release ITP right before it. It’s like this but with added prog & if the two albums had been released consecutively no-one would be in any doubt about Symbolic’s ambition.
It seems unfair to criticise individual albums based on the very high standards an artist has already set.

Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic and The Sound of Perseverence as well are all ambitious albums. Schuldiner was a very, very ambitious artist in general after Human, and I'm saying that considering he was never someone I'd describe as "unambitious".

Yeah definitely. I make no bones about it, Symbolic is my preference because it’s the best of everything...
Human is the closest to core-DM from their prog era & is instantly gratifying.
ITP is the ‘tech-iest’ & has off-kilter grooves & prominent bass.
TSOP moves away from DM almost completely at times, very proggy & varied.
Symbolic has the best elements of all 3, it is the most cohesive & enjoyable overall package.

This is one of the few albums I’m glad I’m listening to/enjoying it now rather than when it was released when I was at senior school. If I’d strolled around saying this was great then I’d have been a massive cunt.

is this something i could like? never heard of this band before joining the site..
|
| |
If brisk, bass-y, technical tho not ostentatious dm tunes sound like your kinda ish then I see no reason not to check it
|
| |
If you like some technical metal, it's awesome, but I don't think you've shown much appreciation for that kind of stuff in the past, correct me if I'm wrong

even if you've never heard any death metal before you could possibly find this enjoyable. it's not by any means the craziest the genre has to offer, but one of the best ever.

technical though not ostentatious sounds like it could walk a good middle line between my taste and the genre.. alright, this goes on today's docket..

I'm not really all that deep into death metal but instantly liked the first three songs on here (i only listened to those). Will check the band chronologically in the next time. Seems like really great workout music too

For workout music I find Bolt Thrower to be the best, which may be good for people who aren't too deep in death metal because the vocals aren't overbearing at all. Death's vocals come through more imo. Not sure if the vocals are much of a factor but some people can't listen to the genre because they hate the vocals lol.

I can relate to that, but i got used to harsh vocals by now. I simply like a changeup from time to time where a little bit of cleans are thrown in. Fear Factory does that in successfully imo, their first album was considered to be the first death metal album with prominent clean vocals after all. They went more industrial after that but it still counts

| |
i do find a lot of death metal vox grating, but if an album (or song) taps into a certain energy, then i find it stops bothering me.. everything just clicks into place then..

I don't really find Bolt Thrower vocals to be overbearing at all in comparison to other bands.

Yep, they are one of the most consistent dm bands of all time. Same with Cannibal Corpse imo.
