so I guess it's a testament to the bands that can stick out or sound distinguished from the others, like Animals as Leaders or Periphery (for better or worse)

Let's not forget that Jens Kidman is one of the worst vocalists in metal.

"I think the biggest problem with djent as a whole is that bands often sound so interchangeable with each other."

Literally the problem with every genre in the internet age. A band comes along with some originality and immediately a 100 others copy them.

I'd never had the problem of being not able to find groups that sound exacly like each other though, especially the bigger ones within each genre. Hxc, mxc, death metal, black metal, post metal (kinda): I could find a couple dozen groups that don't even sound remotely like each other! With djent I can hardly find more than 5

this is also an invitation to prove me wrong if there are examples you can think of

Examples of what? Interchangeable bands in the genres that you mentioned or "djent" bands that sound nothing alike?

the latter, I'm looking for groups like VOLA that push themselves out of the tropes of the genre

Lol, nice goalpost shifting pika. Just because they don't sound like other djent bands means they're not djent? Haken definitely has djenty elements. Destrage not as much, but they get lumped in with the djent crowd a lot.

just because a band has like three djuns across a one-hour album doesn't make it djent

Just because you forgot your lozenges before trying to record vocals doesn't make it black metal, yet here we are.

The Mountain's djent element isn't as apparent as, say, Affinity or Virus. might be the reason why I don't dig those two as much
