"Makes me wonder how many Radiohead, Tool, Rush, etc. fans are clinging to a fanhood for some unwarranted sense of superiority and/or identity."
agreed but i think this absolutely goes the other way too... like people who "grew out of" avenged sevenfold is a perfect example. while radiohead, tool, etc. have that heightened sense of "superiority" attached to them... these guys have the exact opposite association in places like this
these dudes were like a top 3 band of mine when i joined this site in 2015... and by the time the stage dropped a year later i hardly cared about them anymore (nor did i for the six years after that). feel like that's hardly a unique experience for most younger new users, not only when it comes to a7x but other similar "entry level" artists they loved growing up.
part of it is of course just unearthing loads of new artists and genres you never knew existed (and in a7x's case: hail to the king)... but i think there's also a part of metal fans that disown these guys in an effort to fit in with the dudes who are obviously more seasoned listeners that talk authoritatively about how these guys actually suck and you should check isis instead
...think overall metal is an out-group sound made by and for out-group people and avenged sevenfold is about as in-group as it gets for a 21st century metal act. but that spectrum is inverted online and i think people can and will subconsciously betray their taste to fit in, especially when people spend the majority of their time online vs. outside where nobody actually cares

Flug you can’t “fucking word” a post about being true to your taste despite pressure from elitists when the sheer presence of a little red 1 causes cracks in your foundation lnao

Isis? that band is nowhere close to this tho?
I mean, everyone should check them out but what does Isis have to do with anything

@wildcard isis was the token band i thought of that 99% of the online metal community accepts as "the bar" while being nearly unrecognizable from a7x sonically (and a terrorist group to anyone who has never been on a metal forum) for max contrast.
could insert like half a dozen other bands there and it'd mean the same thing

Honestly I remember a time when being an ISIS simp was kinda looked down on by metal elitists. I think people have come around on their last two albums but when they first came out it was viewed as the bands decline

I don’t remember that at all pots but maybe I’m just too young for it.
From what I’ve seen Isis is like universally loved. Almost as loved as bands like Neurosis and Cult of Luna
|
| |
would say ISIS has a stronger rep than Cult of Luna and a far less specific audience than Neurosis
this is off-topic for an A7X thread. jam Perfume you scabby heathens.

Lmao
“From what I’ve seen Isis is like universally loved. Almost as loved as bands like Neurosis and Cult of Luna”
It was mostly from neurosis purists

I remember there being a decisive (but not outright disrespectful) skew towards Neurosis way back hold up

Neurosis fandom really fell off here even before the Scott Kelly stuff came out
