"I'm going to be honest: I almost never prefer the live version of anything to the studio one"
yeah that plus the lack of original songs means I always rate them lower. I quite like The Butthole Surfers Double Live but still inferior to the original album versions.

Happens to me most of the time too. There are exceptions though
Comfortably Numb on Pulse or Strange Kind of Woman on Made in Japan work as examples for me

Zappa's live albums are worth it, mostly because he fixes them up in the studio later heavily and also because most of the tracks that make it onto his official live albums aren't also available on his studio albums
I.E Roxy & Elsewhere and Zappa in New York

Only live albums I've given the time of day are Nirvana Unplugged and Metallica S&M

At one point I had The Black Parade Is Dead rated higher than the original album because I thought Gerard sounded better on the live album, lol.

Portishead's live album is toootaallyyy worth it. So are those of the Talking Heads and Alive 2007 from Daft Punk. But for the most part I'm not a big lover of live albums either.

I get what Ars is saying, but I'd love to here my fave albums as live compilations instead. Feels more "real" and organic.
