2003- 2006 and 2008-2012 are the years where Chino really peaked in terms of vocal performances live. His voice during those years was something else and the live performances reflect that, as do obviously the studio ones.

Lol you got to love it, Reddit and tons of fans freaking out over "respecting the band's wishes" and not listening to the leak
Steph gets asked about it on podcast and couldn't care less lol
"Every album since WP leaked early, it's the internet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"
Guarantee other than learning Smile for live shows he hasn't thought about those songs in forever

It's basically like that with every leak, though.
The initial explosion + inevitable legal suppression happens, debates occur on the ethics of listening to it, and meanwhile the leaked material finds its way onto every dodgy filesharing site you can imagine. Rinse and repeat.
Can't put the genie back in the bottle.

I mean my guy probably isn't a hundred percent certain on what day it is tbh
As for Eros itself - surprised at people's reactions as to "how far along" it really was. These tracks aren't skeletons but the only thing that sounds relatively solidified are the drums. Vocals are a rough sketch but the bulk of the songs have shape, but it's missing a big mixdown and layering, and Frank coming down over the top. It sounds about as far along as the band have stated: music mainly there but missing finished vocals and mastering. It's a fascinating snapshot at the band following on from SNW, but beyond that... I'm glad i heard it.
Most surprising part of all this is how much of a hard restart Diamond Eyes really turned out to be

Steph doesn't give a shit about anything. Doesn't mean the rest of the band or anyone involved in the initial recordings maintain the same cavalier attitude. But it's funny seeing that tossed into the conversation because it shows y'all are pressed to justify seeking out music that wasn't intended for you to hear. But go on about how you don't care what other people think. Cause it's real apparent that you do.

trvth bomb: eros' vocals aren't mixed too high, you're just listening to it immediately after this album where they're mixed super low

yeah despite what they've always said i kinda assumed diamond eyes had at least a little eros dna even if no full songs were kept... like a riff or a melody or just the general vibe subconsciously being recycled to some extent. if anything, that last part may be a little true for kny... but diamond eyes almost feels like the anti-eros.

Briana is so fucking good it legit puts a smile on my face. I like Dallas/Smile way more now in the context of the album as well. Deftones plz get back to writing songs about dem skrippaZ

Someone else mentioned it and I have to agree. Post-DE Deftones is clearly a very different band and while I still love some of their 2.0 material, the WP-Eros stretch was them really capturing lightning in a bottle.
Especially with SNW and what was shaping up to be Eros, they really hit their stride and found a sound that just does it for me.

I kinda agree… but Koi is my favorite album of theirs. Their peak was the era you mentioned but that makes it even more impressive that they managed to drop something so good afterwards, and with only a couple of years between that and Diamond Eyes.
I love Diamond Eyes but Koi is very clearly just a step up in every way imo. I still don’t really understand why Koi’s rocking a lower average but everyone’s entitled to their opinion I suppose.

I see a lot of people saying diamond eyes basically saved the band and while the pre DE material is beloved by diehards the band would likely have dissolved in a timeline where Eros did drop as planned. DE is a total 180 from their prior material and that’s even more reinforced by the Eros leak. Shelving Eros along with what happened to Chi lit an interesting fire under the band and set them on a path to notoriety I don’t think anyone ever imagined. Not sure how much I subscribe to that notion but I prefer the DE-present output ever so slightly.

I’m among them tbh, I don’t think this band survives without Diamond Eyes. The more simplistic and straightforward songwriting is really what they needed at that point, especially coming after probably their most esoteric record ever.

@deviant
Yeah, Frank is the most glaring omission from these recordings. Some extra polish on the vocal front and better lyrics (because tbh a lot of these seem like placeholders just to get the melodies down) plus letting Frank do his thing would really make these songs shine.
But I think it’s extremely impressive that the songs are still this fucking good when they’re so clearly unfinished. A fully complete Eros seriously has the potential to be their best album ever.

Maybe it’s the lack of Frank but I don’t think it’s that clear

if koi sounded like eros production / mix wise i'd like it a lot more
too stiff and rigid and chunky, needs more water
i guess i'm asking for the equivalent to that unmastered ohms demo drop for koi. probably already exists just ain't heard it.
btw the ohms demos sound so much better than the finished product

"Frank is the most glaring omission from these recordings."
Yeah it definitely feels like he's the least 'represented' of the band's members in these versions of the songs.
