For being "the ultimate Smiths album" it sure doesn't sound very Smithsy. Meat is Murder is just half an hour of The Smiths sounding perfectly at home in their own sound.
This one sounds like they got bored so they agreed to try a bunch of other stuff (pastiche 1950s torch songs, the completely unconvincing quasi-Stooges """"proto-punk""" of the title track, etc)
