@mort. well thank you. so she is bi. that's great and all and this might be a touchy conversation, but as a bi person myself i don't think being bi and being gay are exactly interchangeable or directly comparable. imo it's a lot easier to navigate a hateful world as a bisexual person than as a gay person. obviously everyones experience is different and falls somewhere unique on their spectrum and being bi comes with both some similar and some unique hurdles and challenges but i think at the very least the fact that it's easier to be straight-passing makes your experience a lot different. it's just interesting to me that Bridgers is so heavily associated with queerness despite rarely commenting on her sexuality concretely when there are so many other bisexual artists out there who aren't. Why is that?

Or perhaps her comments on it aren't actually that rare and I just don't follow her closely enough

no one. i'm musing about something in music that goes beyond just phoebe bridgers and asking some questions. not that any of them are directed at you or that i'm at all interested in anything you have to say on the matter.

im interested in how popular musicians become queer music icons regardless of their particular orientation and why their particular orientation seems to be a rather arbitrary factor in a lot of instances.

'it's just interesting to me that Bridgers is so heavily associated with queerness despite rarely commenting on her sexuality concretely when there are so many other bisexual artists out there who aren't. Why is that?'

i dont have much to say other than i also find it strange how much she gets associated with queerness. one of the top comments on her snl vid is 'phoebe bridgers performing on snl is the super bowl for the gays, we have been fed'. I dont particularly feel fed by her presence, nor by any gay persons presence for that matter. i like dudes and girls but my sexuality is honestly a rather small part of my life considering everything else id rather be defined by/thought as. Maybe this is connected to being bi as opposed to gay as you said above.
I also feel like the constant focus on gay artists sexuality is reductive and actively contributes to the 'othering' many gay people experience. Phoebe is much more than the fact that shes gay.

im fully aware this could be a dumb as fuck take. i honestly havent thought long and hard on the issue and am fully prepared to admit i havent thought things through fully. just thinking out loud.

and my most dunderheaded smol brain take would be that its because of what shes wearing in the Motion Sickness video. (the top comment on that vid is literally like "hello lgbtq community or something).

" i also find it strange how much she gets associated with queerness. one of the top comments on her snl vid is 'phoebe bridgers performing on snl is the super bowl for the gays, we have been fed'"

yeah, this is exactly what i mean.

"I also feel like the constant focus on gay artists sexuality is reductive and actively contributes to the 'othering' many gay people experience. Phoebe is much more than the fact that shes gay."

i tentatively agree, which is why i found the extent of her association with queer-culture all the more strange considering how - from the extent of my limited perspective and research at least - ambiguous she tends to be about her sexuality.

"im fully aware this could be a dumb as fuck take. i honestly havent thought long and hard on the issue and am fully prepared to admit i havent thought things through fully. just thinking out loud."

I'm with you. Which is why I'm asking and musing as well. It's a bit of a hot topic and I could be convinced either way at this point but it is definitely something I think about and struggle to digest sometimes.

I think this happens with other artists too but maybe more-so with Phoebe because she’s vocal about LGBT issues on twitter and what not, plus she’s one of the more popular artists among indie fans right now. And also her music is relatable to a lot of people for reasons outside of her sexuality so people already feel some kind of attachment because of that, and then the fact that gay/bi people can relate to her amplifies it

"I think this happens with other artists too but maybe more-so with Phoebe because she’s vocal about LGBT issues on twitter and what not,"

if she is I've missed it, but i don't follow her on social media and my experience has been limited to interviews with / articles about her where - as i mentioned earlier - there were more allusions to bisexuality and discussions about just growing up ~looking gay~ than any sort of real disclosure. so there are certainly many better examples and bringing this up with phoebe was mostly just due to her relevance in discussions rather than her being the best example of things like this.

"And also her music is relatable to a lot of people for reasons outside of her sexuality so people already feel some kind of attachment because of that, and then the fact that gay/bi people can relate to her amplifies it"

on the extreme end of the spectrum i just wonder how people like ariana grande become gay icons, instances where the relatability is completely removed from sexuality. i get it with someone like lady gaga because she actually writes about queerness often but...

i assumed you were looking for ways to provoke or ridicule me for bringing up the topic rather than actually wanting to input something so i retract my sentiments about not caring about hearing your thoughts for now

Spotify just released Phoebe's cover of my favorite John Prine song: Summer's End. I bought this on vinyl at the same time I bought Prine's record. Wild coincidence here.

the fact that she’s a real person scares me but also fills me with joy and inexplicable sadness— the closest thing to an explanation i can offer is that she feels so otherworldly that it shocked me to see her in a setting where other real people go
