“ tracklist for the new album leaked, has features from T-Swizzle, Sufjan Stevens, and Phoebe Bridgers (twice)”
Is this good or bad?

that lineup doesn't bode well for them escaping the things that make this album so lackluster compared to the rest of their stuff

Sufjan has been on several of their albums before so that’s unremarkable, Taylor and Phoebe were practically given considering other recent collabs between them and members of the band.

I actually really liked about half of the last Big Red Machine album so I’m joking…but also this album was far too inconsistent and just didn’t really sound like a National album, was missing some defining quality through most of it. Maybe just Matt being off form a lot of the time.

I just sent a sassy email to my (sortof) manager asking him to feckin pay me and his name is also 5 letters ending -an and I had a moment extreme panic thinking I'd freudian slipped and addressed him as Rowan this site has broken me
but more importantly I have extreme doubts that any of the issues with off-form Matt/ill-fitting guest vox on this will be addressed in the slightest by the new feature spots, especially after the Taylor track he guested on

I hate to say it cause Matt has been one of my all time favorite singers and lyricists, but he's kinda been dragging them down, and I hope he returns to his former glory. I like that they had said they wanted to get back to their roots in a sense or something when interviewed about the new album, cause I think that's exactly what they need.

Matt was blazing until TWFM but he's taken a slight deep since. Not that the last 2 albums don't have someof his best moments.

Yeah even tho I actually slightly prefer SWB to TWFM overall, Trouble was kind of the last one with that classic National sound, and has some of their very best songs.
Some of his vocal melodies now just sound off and wonky, it's like he changed his singing style and the lyrics too have lost some of that uniqueness.

Trouble and Beast ruled. This one sadly did nothing for me and seems like this overwrought vessel that somehow brought a complete halt to the insane momentum they had. It's not even an oppressively bad album, just completely forgettable. Like, I literally forget they put this out frequently and keep thinking all the promo for the new era is nice since they haven't had a project since 2017 in my mind. I hope they get it together and come back inspired after the recent detours that they've done. They are certainly capable
