Given this a few spins and I'm really unsure how I feel about it. It seems like it wants to be very expressive and emotive but the vocals are strangely buried; it doesn't feel like there's much chemistry between the singing and the instrumentals, which leaves me feeling more confused than anything.

Can vaguely see where you're coming from, although songs like Dormouse and Julia have the vocals in close sync with the music. Check out the EP if you're confused, I'd say the two are more closely aligned on that

It might benefit you to listen to the rest of their discography and come back to this. I find mewithoutYou to be a very tight-woven group with more chemistry than most any other band out there, but everything in this band, with no exceptions, is eccentric. Aaron approaches vocals like no other front man does, and the band responds to that in its own unique fashion. Catch us for the Foxes and Brother, Sister will show you the foundations this record is building off of.

And my lordt he was crowd surfing while singing when I saw them live. It was quite awesome lol. Love how goofy and eclectic they are. Plus they cover a wide variety of sounds and genres. This is definitely one of their strongest releases, imo, but I don’t think it’s their best starting point. I’d say Pale Horses is probably their best to warm up to their sound. It has their weirder moments but buried under more accessible hooks. It has some of my favorite songs by them on it with Blue Hen and Rainbow Signs, which, imo, is their best closer.

Yeah, Pale Horses is how I got into them, so it's probably the best starting point. And yes, they were so great when I saw them Sunday. 9:27 translates phenomenally live. Pretty much was the perfect setlist.

I was at that same show! The set list was great, but should’ve included 2,459 Miles into Wendy & Betsy though. Loved them throwing in the Spider tracks too. Made me smile, especially at how everyone was singing along.

they have been on sale since they announced the regular preorders back in july or august or something like that, so i don't think they are in danger of selling out (although one of the colorways did sell out)
