As far as I'm aware, Greg wrote all the lyrics (Ben, the music). IIRC, he said he just wanted to make up a word that carried a certain vibe without meaning anything specific.
The general feeling for me, especially in the hook, is an overriding feeling of resignation (the same space "Dead As History" occupies on the following album).
