Think I'm finally coming around to loving "Spit Out the Bone" as mush as everyone else. Not to say I didn't like it to begin with, just didn't hear what everyone else heard. Some of the best lyrics they've ever written and the concept is very well executed. Also one of my fave vocal performances from James.

I'll keep saying the same about Lars

Is there something else he can hit other than the bass dums, the snare and the hi-hat? He doesn't even use the Crashes. Even John Stainer had a minimalistic drum set and he pretty much used everything he can to make the sound as powerful as possible.

Stanier plays in an entirely different league than Lars anyway so the comparison falls short somehow.

This album has a bunch of fat tasty riffs, and some raw energy going on here and there. There's also some random "let's chug it out" songs so it's kinda hard to rate properly hm.

The second disc has some cool parts, too, but the songs don't work as well as on the first one. The really good parts (and there are quite some) work really, really well though, love most of this

Spit Out the Bone is a good finisher but there are fillers on this. Not a classic but not St. Anger either

A lot of really great songs on here honestly, Halo on Fire, Spit out the Bone, Atlas Rise, Moth into Flame, but it's just a tad bit overstuffed. If I would rate both discs individually it would be

disc 1: 4.25/5 (Only song I don't really care for on disc 1 is the t/t tbh, disc 1 is kickass man)

disc 2: 3.25/5 (Definitely considerably weaker than disc 1, disc 2 almost seems like B-sides to disk 1 as well, if maybe Confusion and SotB was put onto disc 1 it would have been a very very solid 8 track Metallica album, and easily up to a 4.5 imo)

So rounds up to about a 3.8/5 for both discs together
