Jokes. I feel if the lyrics were stronger in the verses it would work better, I see what you mean about a simple approach illustrating the concept. But “white leaf on my boxerrrs, green leaf turns to vaporrrr” is some SoundCloud lyricism.

i cant even get mad at any of frank's more phoned-in lyrics because of the moments where his casual style of depicting torrid youth where it feels so spot-on, so perfectly pitched between "relatable/generalized experience" and a particular observation (which means that it also feels like his "bad" lyrics are coming from the same place as his "good" lyrics, maybe?). at times this album moves me like few other things do

ivy might be my favorite of his lyrically

yeah "ivy" is definitely huge feels, didnt like it at first because the diminished chords in the verses made it feel a bit "random"/dissonant to me, or like it isnt going anywhere. dont know how to describe the fact that that sense was wrong but it was. great song

solo is one of the only songs i'm not super into on here. nights is the best by a huge margin but it doesn't matter much because the whole package is consistently enjoyable

I feel like some people make long winded excuses for some subpar lyricism all over this album. But that’s just me. The music’s fantastic so I get wanting to come around to the lyrics, and they are strong in as many places as they are weak, so it does feel well-rounded. It’s something I don’t care for but don’t fault others for digging.

lyrics don't affect my enjoyment of music a whole lot unless they're glaringly awful and center-stage. it's extremely rare that the first thing i notice in a song is its lyrics, i'm usually more attuned to the melodies/samples/whatever

I agree with gyro in 99% of cases and yet I feel (at least a bit) differently about frank ocean in particular. I guess i'm someone who vibes more with pop-music "lyricism" than with more wordy hip-hop or rock or other style of doing words and music, so that I appreciate the depth-in-brevity that I sometimes find there. even songs that are otherwise dumb

I love every song here but either Skyline To or Godspeed are my favs, the collaborators did wonders for the former with how loose/freeform the track is in the first half.
Oh, and if anyone manages to track down a copy of the Boys Don't Cry magazine with the Blonde CD I highly recommend it; a lovely piece of work which I got recently.

So much lithe and flexible balance between personal and universal, happy and sad, serious and funny. Masters the issue of how to turn particular into global experience and how to satisfyingly represent sex on record. 12/10. “Self control” and “nights” in particular are completely perfect

my only memory was drinking way too much every night at uni, posting a comment about Frank not meeting his deadline when Endless dropped that got more likes than any of my other Facebook shit combined, then when he finally dropped Blonde I thought it was average and was hella disappointed
the combo of Blonde and 22AM in my second year of uni was a true gift tho, got me through alive
