Haha, the first time I heard Curl was a...bewildering experience. Coming off Crack the Skye and the Black Tongue single, I was not prepared for Mastopop.

I like streamlined Mastodon when it's done right. Show Yourself is a bit too streamlined though.

I think they're done surprising us. Mastodon are now more craftsmen than artists.

I liked show yourself especially considering pop-rock/pop-metal is hard to do a good job of, but it's sure as hell a far cry from anything else they've done.

"Mastodon are now more craftsmen than artists." can you go a little further and explain to me what this means

I think of it as a craftsman creates things to earn a living, whereas an artist creates things because it's their passion. There's obviously lots of crossover, but by now I think the band is past the point where they're willing to take real risks to reach for something special. It's a comfort zone where they're leaning on their skills and knowledge to make good work, but they won't -- nor need they -- be exploring uncharted territory from here on out.

I mean it's still not ruled out that they'll throw some sort of curveball, or at least one of them will have some off-kilter side project. Kind of like that Frederik dude from Meshuggah.

Yeah of course, but their side projects so far have been a little disappointing (Gone Is Gone, Killer Be Killed, Giraffe Tongue Ochestra, The Seagullmen, etc) compared to Mastodon.

ah that makes sense. thinking about like, hetfield writing riffs at 18yo, and people expect him to write the same stuff at 50

>"...and not being able to sing for shit"

I guess that's what I meant by "sloppy", and was a great fear of mine. Cringing when they sang live. Maybe it just "works" in that live environment though, in the same way that some songs by some bands when performed live can sound rough but you don't mind it so much.

Hopefully.

Still haven't had the chance to see 'em

Would like to reiterate how killer their new album is. Jesus Christ I didn't think I needed a song like "Jaguar God" from them so much until I heard it.
