Yeah darkthrone has the fight riffs, definitely a huge selling point for me

best riffs in bm for me, always distinct and catchy over 30 years too! i love how much they take from thrash and classic metal.

This is fucking awesome, probably the first lofi black metal album ever.
Darkthrone perfected the raw bm sound very early on. Idk if its the very first
i can't tell if either of you are joking so i'm just going to throttle the both of ya

I mean, arguably this is the first proper second-wave bm album released. It’s kinda iffy because of the options, you can quibble with all of them, for example Mayhem’s Deathcrush doesn’t really capture it, Live in Leipzig is a live recording and a mixed bag, this one is sorta death metal still. If it’s not this, it’s probably Burzum’s s/t.

i actually think tormentor- anno domini is the first. attila before mayhem. still a bit more thrashy but undeniably black metal. maybe closer to a bridge between first and second but idk. really cool album tho, check it out.

First lofi black metal is Fallujah
I'm surrounded by a sea of posers

Eh, I’d fight on that. First-wave, sure, and influential on the early Norwegian scene, but the first second-wave bm release? I don’t think so. Snorre’s demo would be a better bet, but even then.

like i said probably closer to a bridge but it's damn close to sounding like a full black metal album, definitely more than deathcrush to me at least. you think this is first? i just hadn't really heard that before tbh

If I had to pick the first indisputable second wave bm album, I’d probably go with Burzum, but this would be my pick for first published album with the distinct second-wave sound even if it’s not consistent. There are a lot of other contenders that are earlier and have pieces of the puzzle for sure, but I think it adds up to this, and then the Burzum s/t.

For the others, I feel like they only make sense as “black metal” retrospectively, when you know where they’re heading, you see what they’re culminating towards and feel the influence of a predecessor, but most of the time they’re still clearly some form of thrash/death/heavy metal, not something you’d distinctly and easily call bm.

If you’re going to give it to a demo, I really think Thorn’s Grymyrk is the best contender tbh.

Snorre is such a weird background character for Norwegian bm. Arguably one of the most influential on the sonic direction that scene took, and he was with Varg on the fateful night, but he’s majorly overlooked too.

yeah you're completely right lol. just a complete afterthought which is crazy considering how influential he was. i've actually never listened to thorns! any good?

Might be blasphemous, but the demo is not that good imo, 3/5 at best, mostly just interesting for historical reasons, but his much later full length album, and the split with Emperor, are quality.

Thorns s/t is one of the most overlooked bm albums ever made.
