You said anybody could say this about any album. Its not iconoclastic to hate on an obscure Death Metal album that maybe 1000 people give a flying shit about. Coincidentally enough, those are usually the same ones who think this album sucks. Ill grant that everything they did AFTER this sucks tremendously, with the exception of Load.

"popularity =/= quality"

That's true to a large extent. But when an album's notoriety and influence is felt in every corner of the world decade after decade...that's a situation where that notion doesn't apply.

I guess you really just had to be there to understand the impact this album had. It was absolutely massive. Came out in a much different time.

@Mayhem, you literally just proved my point when I said "decade after decade." No one will give a fuck about Drake in 30 years and he just mainstream trendy trash. This album will STILL be selling more copies in another 30 years from now.

Drake and this is not an argument. Different time, different genre, different circumstances. This album almost took over the world.

"People who hate on this or say it doenst have merit are just trying to be iconoclasts. "

That's a bit silly

The key point is saying it doesn't have merit. It has more than arguably any metal album ever released, simply by the sheer reach and influence it had. It is the 5th best Metallica album, but easily the most influential from a cultural perspective. So yes, to dismiss it, or to casually scoff at it, is being iconoclastic. And that is not even up for debate.

Dismiss it, maybe, but casually scoff at is being iconoclastic? I disagree.

Who says you have to love it. I'm talking about people who pontificate that is album is garbage and say it has no merit when it was massively important on a cultural level.

I can't really comment on the cultural impact of this, as I was only a beeb when this came out. All I know is that I was raised on their first four, and for me, personally, this album doesn't really do anything for me.

Most overrated metal record of all time. the lyrics on this really are straight out of a 15 year old's diary. I guess we are supposed to feel some sympathy for Hetfield but he's so whiny that it's hard to. The song 'Unforgiven' is without a doubt the worst offender. Let's examine some of the lyrics.

''New blood joins this Earth
And quickly he's subdued''

Here, Hetfield admits he is a natural born follower/weak person. Nothing traumatic happened to him, he's just a weak person naturally.

''Deprived of all his thoughts''

I mean, unless he's being threatened by gunpoint, he's in control of his own thoughts/convictions.

''What I've felt, what I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never free, never me
So I dub thee "Unforgiven"

Oh, gimme a fuckin' break Hetfield. Boo hoo. You voluntarily chose to be a follower and a doormat. If you wanted to be yourself, why didn't you?

''They dedicate their lives
To running all of his
He tries to please them all
This bitter man he is''

Why try to please them?

''A tired man they see no longer cares''

Obviously he does since he's upset about it and wrote this song.

''That old man here is me''

Ooooh, what a shocker. Bone chilling stuff, Hetfield.

That's just one example. The song ''Nothing Else Matters'' is also a terribly whiny love song, although somehow not as pathetic as The Unforgiven.

Also the song 'Don't Tread On Me' has an awful premise and ideological message. Just typical macho American patriotic posturing BS.

Yikes, Eon doesn't realise that lyrics aren't always told from the perspective of the actual singer.
