could almost be described as having a sense of groove or being music

Yeah if “this just sounds like a picking / kick pedal exercise” can be applied to any Meshuggah album as a whole, it’s probably this one. Not that I don’t like the super mechanical industrial rhythmic vibe; it’s just less interesting to me personally than what came before or after.
