Really, this happens? Man, it's not that hard. It feels perfectly natural to me & doesn't seem like an effort.

this. it may try to break me but it will fail. listening to albums in their full is what albums as an artform deserves imo unless it's some straight-to-market hip hop mixtape kind of thing or techno.

Depends on the lifestyle really. Ill always do a full spin before rating but after that its a crapshoot. I usually have time for two full albums a day and then my favorite jams on commutes and lunchbreaks in between.

@ evok: as long as you're jamming full albums at every opportunity that's cool. Of course if you've only got 30 mins here & 20 mins there that's not contusive to complete album listening, unless you REALLY like grind.
I calculate in advance how much time there is (easy to estimate for commutes etc.) & only play stuff I can hear in full based on that, sometimes I start playing something before leaving the house (if I'm ready to leave/early) to squeeze out that extra 5/10 minutes & therefore increasing the quantity of material I've got to choose from.

I don't really mind pausing in the middle of an album if something pops up, but I'll continue where I left off in that case. I just prefer hearing the music in the order chosen by the artist because it's part of the musical expression. Albums in full is where it's at.
Adding to that, listening to an album on shuffle is criminal ^^

Oh yeah sometimes you need to pause, when my wife is trying to speak to me I don't just put my hand up & point to my headphones, haha. I do always start it playing again though, occasionally I'll restart the track if the moment feels lost.

I feel like this whole genre ("post-metal", I'm assuming it's called) is just glorified background music. Not complaining though; it's actually quite soothing. I enjoyed this more than both of the Isis albums I check out.

I listened to Oceanic and Panopticon.
"I could call really any genre "glorified background music" if it doesn't do much to actively stimulate me and keep my attention"
True, but I actually feel like that's what these post-metal bands are going for. Like I'm pretty sure they're aware that most listeners aren't going to be intently tuned in for the entirety of their hour long atmospheric album. It allows the listener to "catch new things" every time they listen depending on when they zone back in.

You might like Celestial a bit more
Salvation is also godly

No man, I dig it quite a bit. I'm new to this stuff, so I'm just trying to piece together what the genre is all about. I'll eventually give them all a listen.

@Demon: hahaha, I know what you mean mate. I don't think I'm brave/stupid enough to do that to my wife either.

calling this glorified background music is a bit of a lazy analysis imo. sure, they're aiming for repetition at times to get you into the feel of the passage slowly building up the song as a whole. this isn't exactly unique for this genre of music, take techno or ambient as examples. would you call those genres glorified background music? I guess one would if one didn't know what to listen for, but the devil is in the details and I think that applies for Cult of Luna as well.
