After my first listen I really enjoyed it, but also not sure about it being all mid-tempo. Not what my expectations were, so gotta go in to the second listen knowing that

Giving Hello Exile a another chance today with fresh ears and different expectations. It's definitely helping. There's a bit of Brian Fallon's magic in there.

serious question - how can people tell greg songs apart from tom songs?
|
| |
Album Rating: 4.5
because their voices sound different?

their voices sound so similar

not really. tom's much brighter where greg's is a lot smoother. kinda hard to tell on the really early stuff but with each album the differences between them have become more noticable

i mean greg has gotten much better at singing for sure, while tom is still tom, i guess. but i don't think i could confidently listen hello exile and say for sure which ones tom is singing.
i guess i feel stupid but i honestly feel like their voices are so similar that it doesn't really matter who's singing

idk ive seen people say that they cant tell the difference quite a bit but i have no problem (on everything post the debut) telling the difference

Portland is obviously Tom. Their voices are pretty similar though.

I find their voices to be quite distinct, i honestly dont know how people mix them up. Tom has a much more punk way of singing, Greg is smoother and more refined, kinda more emo i guess.

Last to Know, Portland, and Strawberry are the Tom songs. Pretty sure the rest are all Greg's.
The second half is definitely a step above the first half, but I was bitching about the production when the singles came out and it seems it was justified. This sounds more like a demo than a professionally recorded album.
Just to cite a blatant example, that vocal glitch at the end of Strawberry Mansions is incredibly cheesy, like someone just messing around with the volume controls.

i used to have a hard time tellin em apart at first but you figure out the differences eventually. tom songs on this one are thick as thieves, house on fire, boy blue and the bars; the rest are greg's. i think just keep that distinction in mind as you listen thru this record and you'll master the art of "telling tom and greg apart" before long!
onion's right that their voices sound a lot more similar on the earlier records
