Naw I can understand, this album is a huge mess compared to the tightness of symbolic. The best riffs on here arent the super technical ones anyway

God forbid someone try to make different music instead of the same death metal album every other DM band is making.
And the riffs are far more technical here than Symbolic, which is relatively straight forward, especially compared to this.

Definitely not a good thing.
Symbolic had far better song writing which is way more important to me than technicality.

Its not about making different music, its just I prefer it when Death m/ out. The previous albums managed to balance the technical parts, this doesnt do it that well.

I've always just enjoyed it when people take risks with music. The first three albums rule but they are just more DM albums with not much TOO interesting or different going on. TSOP just gives no shits. I also love that the 4/4 time signature is used, like, idk...four or five times tops on this album.

...
I don't think that's the right mentality to approach those albums, man.
That said I have nothing to complain on the songwriting on here, everything flows flawlessly from beginning to end for me. Most tracks are rather long and yet the album ends leaving me yearning for another go. I remember the first time I spun the album everything felt almost surreal, sometimes I didn't even realize that the track was changed. It was a maze of desperate vocals, riffs and tempo changes. Also, it's full of (personally, oh well) breathtaking moments, like the very beginning of Scavenger, the chorus of To Forgive Is To Suffer, the crushing and melancholic riff at about 1:40 in Story to Tell... Goddamn I love this album. I am biased, that I can admit haha.

dude if it wasnt for james murphy SH would easily be last its kinda sterile compared to all the others, boring drumming simplistict riffs that go on too long obv i'm being harsh as i love it but its easily at the weaker end of their discog
plus leprosy has the thrashest snare ever made and ITP is in a diff league altogether
