What an album. The band that gets haters from everyone; people who think they aren't punk enough, aren't manly enough, are too poppy, too popular, too edgy, etc. This is an album that really does deserve to be 5'd, and not just because of how creative and explosive it is but also how much of an impact it's had on music as a whole. Green Day isn't considered quite relevant these days but their impact is among some of the greatest legends of our time.

This album may be a bit generic in its lyricism for the most part, but makes up for it with a perfect balance between catchiness and innovation. There are moments that make you laugh, or cry, or shout, and there's enough good stuff here to keep you engaged for a whole album and feel like it was all worth it.

Just listened to this in its entirety for the first time in at least 15 years. This was way better when I was 12.

This isn't as good as I remember but there are still some really great songs on it, namely - Jesus of Suburbia, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Letterbomb, Homecoming, and Whatsername.

It does work well as a whole though and I think it's overall better than the sum of its parts.

The album had zero impact and there were significantly better albums targeted at the Bush era neo-conservativism.

Zero impact how? At changing people's political opinions? Maybe. But as someone that was in 6th grade when it came out, this album was everywhere and I don't think I went a day for almost 2 years without hearing a single off this album on the bus to and from school. Tons of people had American Idiot shirts, printed pictures of Green Day in their school binders, and were exposed to "progressive" (for lack of better term) songs like Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming for the first time.

In terms of influence I'd say the album had a lot of impact.

American Idiot is a pure album, but other albums like Insomniac and Dookie have better quality and lyrical sounding than this album. American Idiot does have some good standards into certain tracks, like the opening track, the fourth track, and the fifth were measly good. Despite its high likeness and the top-to-the-roof rating, the lyrical quality does seem to give out political and conceptual needs like Holiday, for example. Holiday gives out an anti-war song to the Iraq war but also gives the character, the Jesus of Suburbia, having quite a fun time outside out of town and living the dreams on the streets.

Perspectively and personally, my favorite song off American Idiot, concept-wise, would be Are We The Waiting. It brings back the American anthem by the sounding of guitar, and atleast I would thought so from the chorus: " Are we the waiting " sounds atleast like the political anthem of The Star Spangled Banner, which gives out the perfection of American Idiot. Again, this album has a good mindset but other albums are considered to be better.
