I listened to this because I have a friend who is nowhere near this type of music tell me it's actually good. I assumed they had made some grand stylistic change or did something unique so I gave it a spin, hated it, he told me to give it another shot, I spun it some more, hated it, and here we are.

In general I won't rate something unless I've given it a proper listen so I don't end up with a ton of super low ratings. I imagine others are in a similar boat where they know someone who is a part of their cult-like fanbase and insisted they listen to it, and then gave it enough of a listen to feel like they could actually rate it honestly.

You see the thing about Are You Really Okay? is that the subject of the song, in fact, is not really okay even though they say that they are. Go ahead and let that sink in.

The lyrical content or subject matter of a song doesn't matter even one iota if the song doesn't sound good to you from a pure non-contextual standpoint. It's like someone saying "DUDE! You don't like Born in the USA?? It's like.. not a patriotic song, man, it's an anti-war song!", but that doesn't matter because the sounds the song makes sound lame as fuck. Same thing with whatever conversations happening up there ^^^

No different than being able to appreciate the percussion on a track but not liking the rest of it for instance

Pitchfork I see the point with Springsteen tbh

MoM I recall my friend describing it as one of the most haunting experiences he's had and that the song would emotionally resonate if you've either lost someone to suicide or been afraid of someone you love doing it. Because it's sort of a universal feeling they're touching on with it.

I'm not entirely sure what the sound has to do with the cult admittedly but I can't complain when the bulk of it sounds the way it does.

The difference, though, is that it is music. You don't read music. You read poetry. You listen to music. The actually sounds have to be of interest if you want to like it. You can appreciate lyrics all you want, but that doesn't mean that it will make a song that is not enjoyable aesthetically, or however else you can refer to the "sound" of stuff. The door is opened by liking the non-contextual sounds, the lyrics can add to that, sure. The point about liking the percussion on a track is a bit missing the point, but I see where you're gettin at, Pots. But, it's still a non-starter still. It seems pretty obvious so often - music can have no lyrics, amazing lyrics, or bad lyrics, and still be extremely enjoyable to listen to if you like the sounds of the music. If you do not like the sounds of the music, but the lyrics are good, it doesn't make the sounds sound good to you - it may be a great arrangement of words, but those words can now be ingested without actually listening to anything... just poetry. I think it's a roundabout way of thinking that lyrics are a bit of a cherry-on-top of something that needs to sound like something appealing to the listener before the lyrics pull very much weight.

Literally one single instrument having redeemable qualities also isn’t going to make the song if everything else sucks. These are all just components to a song. There’s no difference. You can appreciate an aspect of a song without liking the song on a whole.

No, lyrics definitely 100% without a doubt absolutely can make or break a song. This is another one of those weird hills that you’re going to quadruple down on dying on tho I can tell 😂

I’m not missing any point. I just disagree with the point entirely.

Also if we want to nit pick that argument technically you do read music as well as listen to it. And you can both listen to or read poetry. Context 🤓

Lyrics can absolutely elevate the sounds of music. Folk music is often the most obvious example of this, good lyrics can make a boring ass folk song great. They aren’t written independently like poetry. They are written FOR THE MUSIC. It would NOT be the same just reading the lyrics and pretending it’s a poem. That’s absolute nonsense..

See, I don't think lyrics can "make" the song. If the song is bad, the lyrics aren't going to make it good. I think lyrics can definitely "break" a song, though. If the song is good, the lyrics can totally detract from it. I think the huge difference would be if there was a song someone wasn't really into listening to (you know, the way we experience music) but they liked the lyrics, the could go look them up and read them. Say you liked the drums or some other instrument from a song, you may actually go and listen to the song for that specific reason. Now, if it something like "I like the way the lyrics are delivered", that is no longer the lyrics, but the vocal as an entity. There's a huge thing with Bob Dylan and how his lyricism is so amazing, but I think it is a perfectly valid perspective for someone to not be into his style of music and to think that no amount of amazing lyrics will overcome the disinterest in the sounds of the music or vocalist.

You WATCH movies bro. You don’t READ movies. The dialogue may be a great arrangement of words but now you can just read them independently and it’s just poetry!
