I like both singles. Only listened to each once though, and I’m gonna keep it that way. I want them fresh when I listen to the album in its entirety.



I feel the same way about a Brent-less album. I do feel they’ll still pull it off, they’re all so fucking talented, but Brent has always been the member I most associate with Mastodon when I hear their name. His vocals specifically— esp on blood mountain and CtS. He’s def taken somewhat of a backseat in the past few albums, comparatively to their earlier works. I especially like Brann coming into his own as a solid vocalist, Roots Remain is one of their best songs, especially post Crack the Skye.

If your ghost again is any indication of the album what it will sound like as a whole it'll prob be even better than this. A more proggy heavy version of this record.

I really like this album and thought a Mastodon double album was a great idea. But turns out, a super fucking long album Mastodon is perfect…two is one too many.



I am kinda liking this new-ish release tactic of announcing the new album a mere month or two in advance. I remember when we’d be waiting 4-5 fucking months for albums. At the same time, it really helped to build up the hype, helped it marinate longer.

Oh man, you're right--that album art is sick. They always do such a good job sourcing their album art.

New stuff is growing on me. Doesn't help that it's coming off the back of two of their most catchy albums. It's still weird without Brent.

It does feel weird. Trying to look past it, but it was the same guys for like 25 years.

Honestly never been sure how to feel about Brent as an individual, but he was as big of a part of the band as any of them. His death was an absolute tragedy, especially given the timeline and context of their relationships with each other at the time he passed. Partly think they should have just retired the Mastodon moniker and started a new band tbh

I'm not a Brent simp either, honestly he seemed like an emotionally abusive asshole, but it's still sad that he's dead and I feel bad for the rest of the band. Also I can't deny that he was a great artist.

I can see why some would say that, and in some (most) cases, I'd agree... but not in this instance.

This, really. It's very sad on a human level... but he was increasingly a very disruptive and destructive person (to the band and himself). They parted ways before it happened, because of his downward spiral. He was an incredible guitarist, but he was rarely about because of fucking around, they couldn't function as a band, anyway...

Ultimately, the Mastodon name has clout, and the rest of them have a right to use it to earn a living. Straight-out not fair otherwise. It was obvious that there was no saving the guy, unfortunately.

Yeah unfortunately he definitely lost control completely at some point. Addiction/alcoholism eventually takes over. In recovery myself and work in treatment so I know all too well.
