this band had one of the most critically acclaimed 5 album runs in all of modern music and then drops one slightly worse album and people lose faith in them completely

They are playing couple of shows in Europe now and have already played 3 new songs - Tropic Morning News (Haversham), Grease in Your Hair (Birdie) and Bathwater (Mount Auburn).

Here is video from Paris show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBnPi0f5nRY

I must say that all 3 songs are really great (only 1 listen so far for me) so my hopes for new album are quite high.

nice, thanks for sharing

first impressions: Tropic Morning News - somehow one of the safest songs they've made thus far. doesn't do much for me at all, but listenable at worst

Grease in your Hair - nice SWB vibes, but again, some safe ass shit

Bathwater - easily the best of the 3. feels fleshed out, nice touch with the trumpet, great vibes. still very firmly in their wheelhouse, but i dig this one hard

If theres another album coming they really need to focus again on writing great songs and simplify. This has some great moments, but too much filler and nonsense in places.

"but too much filler and nonsense in places"

pretty much has been the case with all their post 2010 output

Yeah but this one took it to a noticeable new level for me, easily their worst since the debut, and I hate to say it but Berningers phoning it in.

Yeah, I think it's a really solid piece of songwriting. Not all that flashy, and I don't think having Justin Vernon on the track really amounted to much, but the universal meh response to the track seems a tad harsh.

I will concede to the criticisms that trading Bryan Devendorf in for a drum machine is baffling
