but of course test scores get converted into grades and the grades are based on the average scores so the analogy is contentious at best

But this is just a single album rating that's not going towards anything else. Each album is a test. Nothing more.

The analogy I'm using is that each of ratings for each of the albums I've rated are like an individual test score. Example: I personally consider 2.5/5 (50%) to be a very low test score, thus making a poor album. It doesn't matter to me that Sputnik claims 2.5 to be average.

Its not low though, it's in the middle. The only reason that would be considered a bad test score is because it wouldn't give you a good grade, but you don't grade albums

I do grade albums. It's just a synonym for rating them. 2, 3, 3.5, 4.5, whatever.

i ignore the numbers and base ratings off what they actually stand for (good, excellent, etc)

bloc, the problem i see with the way you rate is that theres hardly any middle ground. a 50% is a shitty test score, and so is a 10%. it's "fail" either way. but theres a huge difference between a 70% and a 90%. when you go by the poor/average/great system, its all evenly separated

5's description needs to be changed though; classic shouldn't really be an option

Clim, that is a very good point. I never quite thought about it like that but when I do, I can still differentiate between the lower scores in my head. It's just a bit hard to explain in writing you could say.

If not Graveyards, then Voices or Snakes. Those could work too : )

I think its obvious that albums that have an average rating of 2.5 on this site are pretty horrendous. I dont know how anybody can say that actually means they're average. I consider average around 3-3.5 since giving an album lower than a 1 isnt an option.
