I've been listening over the Slipknot albums all day and while the production on AHIG is much nicer and cleaner, there's something about the raw aggression on the first album that makes it much more appealing to me.

I just can't get past the childish (to me at least) aggression in the first few albums. To me, it's just the stuff that generic nu-metal is made of. Even Iowa, which I do enjoy to an extent, falls victim to this in my opinion. And it's why I enjoy All Hope Is Gone so much... it seems like there was more of a focus on the quality of the music itself than the angsty lyrics. I don't know, maybe that's just me

I get your argument and All Hope Is Gone isn't a particularly bad album by any means, but sometimes it sounds like really middle-of-the-road metal to me. For a band that's grown off such a provocative image, the middle ground just doesn't suit them.
