Is the evocativeness from a lyrical angle or the whole thing? Cause, rereading the lyrics, there’s not much there, even if we were to know the details of the situation, that i can imagine is really going to elevate the song. It’s just written in such a basic, surface level way. Not even in terms of metaphoric usages. Just specificities and nuance and emotional, personal language, it’s so lacking. Like, I’m just trying to understand how something so basic is supposed to be so touching or evocative when it’s as deep as any mainstream pop song of the last 20 years.

I just don’t think i should have to know the specific situation to add a level of subtext the lyrics don’t really give of their own. I shouldn’t have to do the heavy lifting for the song’s barebones lyrical skill
