"Kinda curious as to what they’re doing now or if any new music is in the works"
expect more mediocre 70's prog worship

Time for this one!
(Again!)

De Närmast Sörjande / Next Of Kin is so super Opeth. Needless to say it's so super GOOD.

very glad to see you loving this album so much Trif. It's a huge grower, at first I thought it was ''too symphonic prog'' for my tastes, but gradually realized how lush and warm the songs actually are. And all songs have something distinctive in them

Yes and YES! Very true. Didn't like it half as much when it was released, but the time I put into this has paid of immensely. It's....... like it's an Opeth album!!! (As in: this happened with many of their albums for me.)
A very comfy and lovely record, with sweeping melodies and some nice twists and turns. Can't wait for the next one.

Yeah, I figured that's what you meant fam ;)
I can't wait for the next one as well, to see how was Mikael inspired (or not) by writing that soundtrack, and to see how the new drummer fits with the others. Axe was a huge part in their later sound.
Btw, I think what I felt with this album at first is what many fans were feeling with Heritage when that came out.
|
| |
Yes same. Heritage only clicked after two years, so it's about the same incubation time.

This has grown off me a bit since it came out. It's ok, but it just treads a middle ground most of the time. The heavy parts aren't heavy enough and the quiet parts aren't subtle and beautiful enough. And the production sucks.
Still one of the better of the latest 4, but man do I miss old Opeth.

Ah yes. The only Opeth album I have yet to rate
|
| |
I like the production here, love the new direction and have no problems at all with the heavy or the soft sections. It went the other way around for me, it grew on me massively.

You've all stimulated me to listen to this again. Thanks 💚

De Närmast Sörjande is the most Opeth they've sounded in over 10 years (the bit before the ending) from 5:13 onward. Oh my. So Opeth.
