Something about Sufjan's music makes it play with crystal clarity in my head. I read these lines and it might as well be coming through speakers.

Well that happens to me but probably because I've listened to this and Illinois so much

Officially had to finally give this the bump to classic status.

for such a smooth instrumental goddamn is this a difficult listen sometimes. Those lyrics speak truths that should never be vocalized

on one hand i think this is really great on the other i find it kind of lame that like every single song follows the exact same formula, little acoustic diddy, same-y sounding sufjan vocals, and ending with some reflective instrumental section
don't get me wrong the formula works but like wtf, every single song is like a repeat of the last

Each track has different ambient qualities, but yeah I can see how some people can see it as "samey" from a broader perspective

songwriting genius all over this 1

I mean as an album this is like 80% about vocals and lyrics, the sameness works to distract you as little as possible from what Sufjan is saying and provide the occasional counterpoint.
|
| |
i think sufjan is at his best when creating maximalist, grandiose albums like age of adz and illinois. his songwriting alone just isn't strong enough on this album to make it interesting for me

i think the sameness lacks ambition and potentially shows lack of ability to construct an interesting song lyrics aside tbh
im all for minimalism and i really do like this record but the constantly recycled song formula is a bit silly and all too obvious personally

i generally think the opposite. well its more i think hes better at baroque pop/folk than the whacky electro stuff. this is his 2nd best work to illinois imo

In complete disagreement with Ryus on this one - a lot of his overly quirky and experimental stuff seems forced to me, though it's worth him pushing himself in that direction from time to time for the occasional gems (Age of Adz t/t, etc)

"i generally think the opposite. well its more i think hes better at baroque pop/folk than the whacky electro stuff. this is his 2nd best work to illinois imo"
yeah i agree, its like how shitty the new bon iver is, should have stuck to their strengths
|
| |
while bon iver's new album isn't nearly as good as for emma, i commend him for trying new things since another "for emma"-type album probably would be disappointing.
i'm all for stripped-down minimalist folk, but this album just feels really bland to me

yeah you can have an album that is even further in the minimalist direction yet is more diverse and therefore interesting than this

"but this album just feels really bland to me"
idk, i think the opposite. genius indie/pop songwriting here straight up, with the exception of a few tracks. but should have known better, the closer, fourth of july, all of, I mean I found those to be BRILLIANT
|
| |
fourth of july and should have known better are probably my favorites here
i can appreciate the emotional aspect of the music a lot of the time it almost feels like he's relying on emotion in lieu of songwriting. i know pretty much everyone disagrees with me here
