"Lol the shorter songs are the most memorable and creative things here"
Not when Shallow and Open Car are part of the short songs batch

A real spicey and trve take is this isn't a top 5 PT album

I'd probably put this one 5th these days:
1. Signify
2. FoaBP
3. Stupid Dream
4. Lightbulb Sun
5. Deadwing
And then Sky Moves Sideways would be a close 6th

"but cannot abide any Mellotron scratch slander"
That's my least favorite here :[ Still a good song though

have to relisten to signify. i avoided that one because it didn't have any bangers but it's probably really good.

For me, Signify is the best kind of transitional album. It has all the cool psychedelic shit that made The Sky Moves Sideways so fun to listen to, but with the leaner, more focused songwriting of the band's later work. Plus, its atmosphere is so intriguing in how dark and twisted it is, at least compared to other PT records

Signify is excellent
Don't know if better than Sky Moves Sideways tho

"A real spicey and trve take is this isn't a top 5 PT album"
This doesn't feel spicey to me at all, because I completely agree, but I know very well that it is lol. This is very overrated, probably even more than In Absentia, a record that just bangs way more and drags so much less

Closure/Continuation and In Absentia are currently wrestling for the 3rd-worst spot for me right now. The former is leaner and has less filler - as well as not being bogged down by weak social commentary a la Sound of Muzak - but I can't deny the nostalgia I get with the latter... not to mention classics like Trains, Lips of Ashes, and Gravity Eyelids

Well, it's ez for me tbh, C/C bores me way too much, I would put it above Sunday of Life and not look back. Even Deadwing is more exciting

Yeah, I know I'm a bit of an outlier when it comes to IA in general. It's still a good album, but the alt-metal stuff just sounds really dated (as it does on this as well, admittedly) and there are about three or four songs that I'd axe from it entirely. I used to love it as a kid, but it's probably the PT album that's held up the least for me - at least as far as their more acclaimed ones go. Honestly, FoaBP is the only metal-era PT record that still gets consistent rotation from me anymore

My top 5 would look like:
1. FoaBP
2. Lightbulb Sun
3. In Absentia
4. Stupid Dream
5. Signify
I also used to not be a huge IA fan but the middle section has grown a lot on me over time. But I think what ultimately hurts both IA and Deadwing is the tracklist sequencing, especially Deadwing. Shallow>Lazarus>Halo makes zero sense cos it’s like complete tonal whiplash

Stupid Dream is the one that I come back to the most, but I think Fear of a Blank Planet is blessed by its smaller track list and the best-track-in-their-catalogue contender that is "Anesthetize."

1. In Absentia
2. The Sky Moves Sideways
3. Stupid Dream
4. Deadwing
5. Signify

Pretty accurate, I completely agree!

LS and FoaBP are my runner ups. If Buying New Soul and Cure for Optimism were there instead of Four Chords (but keep that bridge section with the sitar and put it somewhere) it would be in my top 3 probably.

Had a friend say the beginning of 'Deadwing' reminds him of Metal Church...
