No one in rock music is safe from Metallica influence so downplaying their importance is silly imho.

I remember seeing Opeth for the first time, being a prime Opeth snob at the time (how could you not be pre Watershed), and Mike is mucking about with his guitar and chatting up the front row of the audience and have them guess songs. He then says "Everyone Knows This One", closes his eyes and plucks the acoustic mid section of To Live Is To Die for a minute. He goes on to say "If it wasn't for this part, Opeth wouldn't exist and none of us would be here today".

One way or the other the work of James and Cliff in particular reshaped the entire rock/metal genre.

Yep guys, u made me revisit the AJFA and that was a trip... for 254th time. Absolutely magnificent album. All of us are biased one way or another when we listen to music, even subconsciously. That's why i'd wish to clean my mind somehow and taste songs like To Live is to Die like it's the first time. Or like there is bass lol.

I revisited this in response to a convo I had with the dude who runs the record store I frequent. I was making fun of him for saying that it was his fave album, he said it was a groove album and way better than people give it credit for.

so I revisited it for the first time since its release, which I hated it then

Time has been pretty good to this album, I hated it becasue it sounded like a lot of other things I was listening to at the time, and wondered why they would decide to lower themselves to be ordinary in retrospect I feel the same way, but listened to in a bubble it is a good album with some good grooves, needs more bass, and somebody to play drums who has a clue. James is the star here, if by necessity or demand but he is good on the album, stil would like them to not be ordinary and be themselves but whatever

This vs. AJFA is like leaving two extremely ugly, clumsy rabbits in an enclosure and seeing which eats the other one first. Not a contest that's going to bring joy to anyone at any point, stop this cruelty
