Band has a lot in common with Portal tbh.

With regards to the 1st-5th gear songwriting, I mean.

and in their extensive use of dissonance. personally I don't really get Portal, but I can definitely see their appeal.

I found Portal - Outre to be really easy to get into after having experienced DSO.

And Paracletus certainly has some, as we call it, 1st to 5th gear movements, but it's more like 2nd to 5th as there really isn't a dead quiet passage like Fas has. Dearth and Epiklesis II serve as those moments

yeah Fas is spacier for lack of a better word. it's part of why I enjoy it slightly more. I also feel that the full-blown mental sections are a little more wild and "outre there" (eh?! eh?!!) than on this release.

On Kenose and Fas in particular (although Carnal Malefactor is a good example, too) there's very startling moments where the music goes to basically silence and then suddenly all the instruments along with Aspa come in and it's just very startling. It's better for this band that they're into chaos and so none of them quiet parts are like overbearing or pretentious. More so scary than anything else. There's no 'transition' it's very punk in that way. It's like they say fuck it let's ruin this moment (using ruin in a complimentary way).

'yeah, few albums where it's full gear from start to finish manage to maintain that energy. it actually loses power after a while of pure pummeling. you could write the hardest riff beknownst'th to man but if the preceding set of five riffs are all blast then that would get lost or at least not be as effectual as it could be. give us a breather ffs.'

Damn this is an accurate statement, it can be done but I find very few bands can pull of a relentless pummelling release without me losing interest. I read someone saying Cannibal Corpse have amazing openers, yeah there might be a reason for that. Losses it's effect after a while, probably why I'm not really into brutal death/grind.

Also, reading this thread has reminded me, I should probably check out Portal.

The lyrics are great agreed. Happy I speak some french so I understand the brunt of those parts. The Latin is where I get lost, but it adds to the mysterious atmosphere. Oh and there's always google translate..

I posted this on another review but it appears that thread is dead. So I will repost it here.

I was talking with a guy who knows Mikko Aspa and he sort of confirmed the theories that Aspa just visits Deathspell Omega but that it's absolutely not his band. ''He's basically just visiting it'' the guy said. He's an older guy who is into the Finnish metal scene. He's known Aspa for over 20 years.

Interesting to have these theories confirmed. And it makes me wonder who is in control of the band back in France.

By the way if anybody is interested the guy has a small-ish YouTube channel where he reviews albums and does interviews. Look up 'Rauta' on YouTube.

It's probably Hasjarl. I have also heard that Carpenter Brut produced the albums.
