anyone's ghost has a pretty immediate hook but on repeated listens the other songs surpass it

fake empire was the song that got me into 'em.
is anyone in agreement that trouble will find me is way sadder and catchier than high violet?

conversation 16 isn't excellent to you? well, i can only speak for myself and i can say that hv is an album i always play when i've been away for awhile. it's just a very comfortable place to be. I know for a fact that matt doesn't write songs like most songwriters do, but rather, he creates them in the process, while the music is playing, so that's why some of lyrics might seem incongruent or silly, because sometimes he might sing a line solely because of the words and the effect that they have when sung aloud. this means that a lot of the interpretation of the songs are up to the listener, although they always follow some theme that makes it identifiable at least what is going on. etc.

it has a bit sadder tone yeah but i wouldn't really say it's catchier

that stream of consciousness approach yields mixed results, and not just with the national. people oft times (and i'm not accusing you of this per se) use that as a justification for why something sounds nonsensical or bad. i understand the process of doing it (it's kind of like sigur ros using hopelandic because contextually the vocals fit the music so well so who gives a shit that it's rubbish), but it can be very detrimental to my headspace if i'm enjoying a song and a ridiculous lyric comes up that i can't ignore.

graceless, sea of love, i should live in salt are all way, way, way catchier than anything on high violet if you ask me.
oh and for the record i do think conversation 16 is among their best songs, i just kind of wish they omitted that part.

trouble will find me is certainly more accessible and catchy than high violet, although it's an inferior record on the whole

his voice also has way more power behind it on trouble will find me imo, and that's blatant right from the beginning. on high violet (and on their two preceding albums) he sounds much more monotonous. not necessarily a bad thing - it works extremely well here and alligator, and much of high violet. nice to see him experimenting vocally and reaching for new heights though

the general consensus seems to be that high violet is way better than trouble will find me but i think the latter is far more engaging. this is the last time might be my favourite national song. it has songs far sadder than high violet and ones so very catchy - sea of love has one of the best choruses ever. gah why does no one agree with me

the problem with trouble will find me is it mixes all of that with some generally weak songwriting, the kind of songs the group used to only write once in a blue moon, yet seem to have been plagued by during the creative process for it.
