His voice on this is so weird compared to their earlier stuff, he's got some kind of Flowers-esque country twang to it

"The Gold", esp in Nick Waterhouse's remix, is so good. Going through some though times and this almost made me cry.

approaching the end of university and thinking about how this helped calm and support a lot of the nerves and aid the excitement in the summer before going to uni 5 years ago

Yeah especially that stretch in the middle. I don't know how to describe how soothing The Alien is when you're actually going through some shit.

If it wasn't for The Mistake this would be the hardest 5 ever

The Mistake is such a diamond in the rough. I absolutely love it, especially the "I don't wanna walk away from you" part at the end (which is reprised on Angel of Death, btw!) along with the playful "WOOO!!!". It's just so powerful and simultaneously humorous/disarming. It's easily in the top half of the tracks on this album for me. If anything I'd swap out The Parts (I truly appreciate this song, don't get me wrong) for I Know How to Speak, which fits the atmosphere much better, would have brought The Maze full circle, and would have given this a twin towers closer kind of feel. Whatever though, perfect album is still perfect.

Haha I can see why someone wouldn't like it, so I'm not saying you're objectively wrong. But that part feels like a "hey guys, we're still human" moment amid all the bleak intensity and depression. Brings a huge smile to my face every time.

The Mistake has a decent melody but isn't spectacular. It sure as hell is ten times better than The Parts though, that's easily the weakest cut here imo. Album is otherwise filled to the brim with amazing songs. I think The Wolf and The Silence don't get enough love

Not in my book, "The Grocery" and "The Wolf" is the best song pairing here and where the narrative hits a climax.

Nice! The Grocery is such a fucking great song. And yeah def one of the strongest pairings. If I had to pick just one song it would probably be The Alien

I feel like The Internet is a much weaker version of The Silence

It is inferior but still a really good song imo
